The Hiding Place Revisited VS. Slaughterhouse Five

Slaughterhouse Five and The Hiding Place Revisited describe the war in very different ways.

The Hiding Place Revisited tells the story of the Jews hiding away from the Nazis and the story of the resistance during World War Two. It is a pretty standard approach to telling a war story by following the war chronologically and addressing events as they occur. It included seen with the main Jewish characters hiding in a secret compartment or stealing German war plans. The writer of is obviously against the unjust treatment of Jewish people and thought it was good to make a movie addressing the cruel acts of the Nazi party. Slaughterhouse Five, however, had a much more unconventional approach to discussing the war. It focuses around the character Billy, who is said to possess the ability to travel through time. It has a scene where he is clearly losing his mind and “meets aliens. Billy revisits times in his life before and during the war creating a non chronological progression throughout the book. The author of Slaughterhouse did actually serve in the war and wanted to write a story talking about it. He wrote a strange, unhinged story about a time traveler, but by doing this, he could be trying to illustrate the effects war has on the mind.
